  • Description

The George FCC is loaded with features like FM mode and CTCSS tones to give you clearer transmissions, and added privacy.

The George FCC from President Electronics is one of the few CB radios on the market that offers FM mode, as well as CTCSS and DCS. So not only can you take advantage of the increased clarity on FM, but use the the radio to access repeaters, and make for a more secure communication amongst friends. It also comes with some of the other new features President has rolled out like their Noise Reduction Circuit, and Scan Skip.

In FM mode you'll get better audio quality and a signal that's less prone to electrical or atmospheric interferences. FM maintains a more consistent audio quality over a longer transmission range compared to AM, but AM has increased range and can be heard longer as the signal fades. You can utilize the FM mode and the NRC Noise Reduction Circuit to eliminate that snap, crackle, and pop you hear, and the background noises you transmit.

CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) & DCS (Digitally Coded Squelch) are functions for the FM mode that enhance privacy and reduce interference by assigning a unique tone to your transmission. When you program a tone or code into a frequency your signal is encoded and can only be heard by someone with that code saved as well. when a radio detects the coded signal it opens the squelch allowing the audio to be heard, but if the other listener doesn't have the code they won't hear a thing.

This is perfect for creating talk groups between truck drivers and pilot or escort vehicles, allowing you to communicate clearly without cross talk or interference from others on the same channel.

More innovation from President
I continue to be impressed with the equipment President is designing. So many other CB manufacturers continue to churn out the same stuff they made 30 years ago. Others that have attempted some new, modern features fell short (IMHO) of the mark. President is succeeding, although nothing is perfect.

I have used the McKinley and the upgraded McKinley II, both of which are outstanding rigs. The George surpasses that mark and adds even more features that are ground-breaking in this market. Adoption of FM by actual radio users is still slow from my perspective, but that may accelerate now that more and more manufacturers are folding it into their line of radios. I like the availability of CTCSS/DCS on George when using FM and think that will be very useful when traveling with friends and family. The Noise Reduction Circuit (NRC) is especially nice and seems to work well, a welcome addition to the usual ANL/NB that may or may not effectively reduce noise. The NRC seems similar to digital noise reduction available in modern ham radio HF equipment, although perhaps not quite as sophisticated.

I only have two issues that led me to go with a 4-star rating. First, the Automatic Squelch Control (ASC) which I love on McKinley seems too aggressive on George, and somewhat inconsistent. With ASC turned on, many signals that are strong enough to break through normal squelch won't come through ASC at all. Other weak signals that fade in and out will come through ASC in spurts rather than being squelched entirely. I didn't have this problem with ASC on McKinley. However, manual squelch on George seems to work better than manual squelch on McKinley. On McKinley, manual squelch is hard to set effectively without turning it WAY up, otherwise small changes in signal strength cause the squelch to constantly open and close. On George, it works more like older radios I've used where you can set a threshold and it does a good job of maintaining it.

The other gripe is that switching between all-channel and memory-only scan is tedious on George, requiring a visit to the menu settings. On McKinley, it's a simple keypress on the front panel. Not a deal-breaker, but frustrating since President had it right to begin with and, IMHO, should've used a similar mechanism on George.

Still, George is the best radio I've ever used across many years, models and brands like Cobra, Uniden, Realistic, Lafayette, Galaxy, etc. I'm likely to buy another one or two before I'm done.
